Power distribution in a relationship refers to who has greater ability to influence or exert control over others in the relationship despite resistance. Power is fundamental to all human relationships no matter how close or distant. Power distribution exists in all relationships, successful relationships consist of a power distribution that both partners are satisfied with. When power distribution fails it is likely that one partner tries to act more like a boss then a lover which is when a problem occurs. * The following are measures of power balance within a relationship.
1. Balance of Power- This may vary between the type of relationship you have. The variances include balanced, or unbalanced. When power is unequal in a relationship type where they are suppose to be the same then this is going to be a problem in that relationship. On the other hand, if the relationship calls for unequal power distribution, such as a traditional relationship, then this will be a positive in the relationship.

Note, in some relationships different topics call for a different decision maker. Every relationship is different based on the bounds in the communication they use.
3. Emotional Involvement- This is an understanding of interests in the relationship. If one person is less, or more interested in the relationship, it causes there to be an off balance in the relationship. A way to overcome this off balance is to communicate your hopes and aspirations of the relationship. In other words ask your partner where you want the relationship to go?
4. Equity- This is the fairness of a relationship and what each person gains from the relationship. If both partners benefit from the relationship it means that they are gaining an understanding power balance. With appropriate communication you can reach a power balance that you are comfortable with. Attaining the right amount of equity for you, and your partner can result in a happy loving relationship.
